70's Motel Sign - From Concept to Working Scale Model - Part 1

Updated: Jul 27, 2018

One of the early challenges I set for myself was to go through an entire design process utilizing multiple tools & mediums to get my concept across. Having traveled across the United States, I found numerous motel signs along the way and was curious to see if I could design one.

I chose the 1970's for its unique aesthetic when it came to shape, style, and color. Additionally, you can still find some of them standing today.

The first step was to research and find references that embody the signs & the 1970's aesthetic. The internet is such a wonderful research tool that I was able to find several images that had all the elements I was looking for.

Narrowing down from over a dozen research images, an initial sketch was made based on them that embodied what I felt was the style of the 70's sign. I also added color to symbolize the feel of the 70's.

Tools Used:

  • Computer (Research)

  • Pencils

  • Ruler

  • Ink Pens

  • Markers
